Rally: Save the Michigan Film Tax Incentive

Over the past year-and-a-half, Michigan has developed a national reputation as a great place to make films. Well, it seems that some misguided legislators in Lansing want to yank the rug out from underneath this growing state industry, one that has employed thousands of production staff, actors, extras, carpenters, electricians, caterers, etc., on Gran Torino, Whip It!, Betty Anne Waters and so many other big screen offerings. Next Monday, October 26, there will be a rally in Pontiac to save the Michigan Film Tax Incentive so, if possible, please attend.

Michigan Creatives Membership Drive

 

As I've been listening to public radio stations make a push for new members this week during their fundraising drives, I thought it would be a perfect time to ask those of you involved in creative endeavors throughout the Great Lake State to join Michigan Creatives. I founded this social network on the Ning platform in February, and many people that I've known for years -- and some I've met only through it -- have joined. However, I'd like to double membership by the end of 2009, and am planning to become much more active on the network. When you join (it's free), I encourage you to upload portfolio material to your page, invite others to events, blog, chat, et al. It's another way for us to showcase the deep pool of creative talent in our two peninsulas. Michigan Fall Color Tours

My wife, daughter, and I went to Parmenter's Northville Cider Mill on Sunday, and along the way I kept pointing out the vibrant colors that were starting to burst from trees on Prospect Road, M-14, etc. Check out these Michigan Fall Color Tours, courtesy of Pure Michigan, while you can still take in peak season, although that may soon pass in the Upper Peninsula. Still, there's much to see around the lower portion of the state, so grab the family and your camera, then enjoy some of the country's most spectacular vistas.

OK, so I changed the verbiage slightly this time around for the online destination that I am honoring here in October. That's because it was a resource -- or if you prefer an index, compendium, et al. -- rather than an individual site or blog that most grabbed my attention. Parents and others will glean plenty of information on how to entertain the younger members of their clans when they visit Absolute Michigan's 2009 Michigan Haunted Attractions, Corn Mazes & Halloween Guide, chock-a-block with places to visit all month long.

One of the many useful links on this page takes you to a directory of U-Pick Farms and Farmers' Markets where, among other things, you can locate places to find the pumpkin that's just right for your family. Living in Ypsilanti, I can speak first-hand to the Night Terrors at Wiard's Orchards, which my 6-year-old daughter took in a few years ago, and there are many other places to experience Halloween thrills and chills, Whether you're a follower or skeptic, be sure to click on links to paranormal resources and groups in Michigan, as the sites to which they point are, for the most part, eye-catching, I didn't realize there were so many corn mazes in the region, so if you can spare the time, check them out, as well.   

As usual, the staff at Absolute Michigan has captured the spirit of the Great Lake State, and I'm pleased to celebrate their work as October's "Arresting Resource of the Month."
